FOB Test: The Examination That Can Prevent Colon Cancer

March is internationally recognized as Colon Cancer Awareness Month, aiming to raise public awareness about a disease that is the third most common cancer in Cyprus, with approximately 395 new cases annually. Worldwide, over 1.3 million people are diagnosed each year. Early diagnosis is crucial, as the disease often does not present symptoms in its early stages. International scientific organizations emphasize prevention and early diagnosis through organized screening programs, especially for individuals at increased risk. Colonoscopy is the most well-known examination, but less familiar are simpler, non-invasive methods such as the fecal occult blood test (FOBT/FIT). The FOBT/FIT test is a simple, painless, and reliable examination that can detect traces of blood in the stool that are not visible to the naked eye. A positive result requires further investigation, while a negative result requires repeating the test annually. It does not replace colonoscopy but serves as a first step for early detection. The Ministry of Health in Cyprus implements a population screening program for colon cancer, while Greece has implemented a pre-symptomatic screening program with European funding and cooperation from the private sector, providing free examinations to the target population. The utilization of European funds and the cooperation between the public and private sectors serve as a good practice example.
