Flu Season Claims 13 Lives in Cyprus, Breaking Age Barrier

The flu has caused 13 deaths in Cyprus since the beginning of the current epidemic season, with the latest being a 54-year-old in a private clinic. Dr. Elisavet Konstantinou, Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Health, stated that the flu has broken the age “barrier” of the elderly, as most deaths involve people over 80 years old, but there are exceptions. The epidemic appears to have reached its peak and is showing a slight decline, with a reduction in cases and hospitalizations. However, the healthcare system remains under pressure, both in the public and private sectors, due to the increased burden from respiratory infections. The Ministry of Health assures that there is an adequate supply of antiviral drugs and diagnostic tests. It is also noted that there has been a good response to vaccination, with more than 145,000 vaccinations administered.
