First Disciplinary Fine Imposed on Audit Firm - €60,000 Penalty

The Public Audit Oversight Authority (PAOA) is handling several cases involving audit firms, which are at various stages of examination. The Director-General of the Authority, Panos Prodromitis, informed the Finance Committee about the Authority's budget for 2026, which is balanced and amounts to €1.9 million. The funding of the PAOA comes from the Republic of Cyprus (20%) and from the recognized Audit Bodies (80%). Mr. Prodromitis mentioned that in 2025, a disciplinary fine was imposed on an audit firm for the first time, amounting to €60,000, which was paid into the state's permanent fund. The Authority has begun consultations to amend the Auditors' Law, aiming to speed up the disciplinary process and introduce a conciliation procedure. It is also in consultation with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC) to issue regulations that will address ambiguities in the law. The signing of a memorandum of understanding with the corresponding US authority was significant, allowing Cypriot companies to raise capital from the US and giving prestige to the country. In addition, the PAOA will host the International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators (IFIAR) Inspection Workshop in Limassol in March.
