Fidan: Turkey Closely Monitoring Cyprus, Greece, and Israel Cooperation

Published January 15, 2026, 14:34

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Turkey is closely monitoring the military and energy cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, and Israel, considering it a potential attempt at “encirclement.” However, he noted that there is currently no direct impact, but the dynamics and message of these moves are not going unnoticed. Warnings have already been issued to those involved, emphasizing that such moves do not serve anyone's interests and may lead to regional instability. Fidan referred to a “historic opportunity” to resolve problems in the Aegean, expressing confidence that a permanent solution is possible based on realistic analyses. He confirmed that contacts are underway for a meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before Ramadan (February 19), considering two or three possible dates. The Turkish Foreign Minister stressed the need for intention and political will to resolve Greek-Turkish differences, proposing a dialogue “at the table” until a solution is found. The Aegean will be a key topic of discussion, with a focus on territorial waters and the continental shelf. Furthermore, Fidan emphasized the need to implement confidence-building measures and strengthen relations between the two peoples, while noting that in Greek politics, Turkey is often presented as a threat, acting as a factor of political cost. However, he acknowledged a period of calm in the last two years, with the functioning of existing mechanisms and cooperation on issues such as migration.
