Feast Day of Great Monday: Who is the Day Dedicated to and Who Celebrates on April 14th

Today, Great Monday, the Church honors the memory of Joseph, son of Jacob, and the barren fig tree that Christ cursed. Joseph, the youngest son of Jacob, suffered persecution from his brothers due to his virtuous life and was eventually sold to Egypt, where he became the chief cook of Pharaoh Petephre. The story of Joseph in Egypt includes the interpretation of a dream that predicted seven years of abundance and seven years of famine. Joseph successfully managed his power and cared for the people during the famine, while also forgiving his brothers who had envied him. In addition to Joseph, today honors Saints Aristarchus, Pudens, and Trophimus, of the seventy Apostles, Saint Thomas the Martyr, and Saint Demetrius the New Martyr of Tripoli. Also honored is Saint Ardalion the Mime. Those named Aristarchus, Thomas, Thomida, Thomae, Sabbas, Sabboula, Sabbina, Trophimos, and Pangalos celebrate their name day. The Matins of Great Tuesday, also known as the Bridal Service, is held on the evening of Great Monday.
