European Commission VP Runs in Nicosia Marathon – 'I Enjoyed it Very Much' – What She Says About Cyprus

European Commission Executive Vice-President Hanna Virkkunen participated in this year's Nicosia Marathon, finishing in 4 hours, 16 minutes, and 37 seconds. Her participation took place during the official visit of the College of Commissioners to Cyprus, on the occasion of the country's assumption of the Presidency of the European Council. Ms. Virkkunen expressed her enthusiasm for the race, highlighting the good weather and the enjoyable experience. Ms. Virkkunen has run approximately 15 marathons in ten EU member states, including the Athens Authentic Marathon in 2017. She started running long distances 13 years ago and finds it relaxing and beneficial. Her participation in the Nicosia Marathon is part of her effort to combine her professional obligations with her personal well-being. During her stay in Cyprus, Ms. Virkkunen visited the Green Line with her colleagues, where she had the opportunity to learn about the division of the city and the ongoing occupation. This visit was considered important for understanding the challenges facing Cyprus. Ms. Virkkunen emphasized that Cyprus, due to its experience with division and occupation, understands very well the importance of security, especially in a period of geopolitical tensions. She expressed her support for Cyprus and its efforts to play a constructive role in the EU.
