Europe Says Goodbye to Russian Gas – Why Interest in the Vertical Corridor Remains Lukewarm

Europe is striving to reduce its dependence on Russian natural gas, considering it a strategic success despite gaps in its planning. The ban on imports of Russian gas has received final approval from the EU, while TTF prices have reached a 10-month high. However, the real challenge lies in finding reliable alternative energy sources. Despite the importance of the Vertical Corridor as an alternative solution for transporting natural gas from the South to Central and Eastern Europe, interest in it remains limited, with low participation in recent auctions. This is mainly due to the higher cost compared to other routes, such as those through Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. The situation in Ukraine, with extensive damage to energy infrastructure, also contributes to the reduced demand for the Vertical Corridor. A lack of sufficient political impetus and market hesitancy further exacerbate the situation.
