EU Parliament Approves Anti-Corruption Directive

The European Parliament has overwhelmingly approved the Anti-Corruption Directive (581 in favor, 21 against, 42 abstentions). The Directive aims to strengthen the tools and measures available to Member States to combat corruption, particularly in cases of abuse of power and embezzlement of public funds. The Directive provides for specific measures to prevent, suppress, investigate and prosecute corruption cases involving high-ranking officials. It considers the fight against corruption fundamental to strengthening democracy and the rule of law, focusing on preventing the creation of corrupt practices. Particular emphasis is placed on protecting public contracts, which are considered vulnerable to corruption due to the complexity of the procedures and the significant economic interests involved. Measures are proposed to enhance transparency, oversight and accountability in public contracts, such as the development of clear guidelines, the promotion of digital solutions and the creation of protection platforms for whistleblowers. In addition, the Directive sets out guidelines for the funding of political campaigns and parties, setting limits on spending, contributions and providing for the publication of accounts and expenses. Corruption is considered a blow to the fundamental principles of democracy and has serious economic consequences, such as increased public spending and distortions in competition.
