EU Ministers to Discuss Migrant Returns to Syria and Afghanistan

At the informal EU Ministers' Summit in Nicosia, the Deputy Minister of Migration, Nicolas Ioannides, announced that ways to increase migrant returns to their countries of origin, including Syria and Afghanistan, especially regarding convicted criminals and individuals posing a security threat, will be discussed. The discussion will focus on implementing the EU Asylum and Migration Pact and finding a legal framework for returns. Ioannides emphasized Cyprus's intention to share best practices with other member states and work to eliminate secondary movements from the island, while referring to a pilot program to strengthen returns to Syria in 2026.
