EU-Mercosur Deal Sparks Controversy in Cyprus

The EU-Mercosur trade agreement has triggered strong reactions in the Cypriot Parliament. While the government argues that the agreement includes “safeguards” and offers opportunities for shipping and pharmaceuticals, MPs and agricultural organizations express fears about negative impacts on the Cypriot primary sector and the import of low-quality products. Specifically, the lack of protection for halloumi was highlighted, as it was not registered as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) when negotiations began. Significant differences in production costs were also mentioned, such as in honey, where Latin American products are considerably cheaper than Cypriot ones. Concerns were also raised about the use of pesticides banned in the EU but permitted in Latin America, as well as the adequacy of water for production.
