EU-Mercosur Deal: Risks for Agriculture, Health, and Food Security

The upcoming trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur is causing strong reactions, particularly from the agricultural sector. Critics argue that the agreement favors multinational corporations at the expense of small producers and jeopardizes the sustainability of agriculture, food security, and consumer health. According to Yannakis Gavriel (MP for AKEL, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture) and Giorgos Georgiou (MEP for AKEL), the agreement will lead to a massive influx of agricultural products from Mercosur countries with lower production and control standards. This will create unfair competition for European farmers and undermine their income. Furthermore, it is pointed out that the pesticides and antibiotics used in Mercosur countries are often banned in the EU due to the risks they pose to health. This agreement, according to AKEL representatives, sacrifices the interests of farmers and consumers in favor of large exporting industries. The AKEL representatives criticize the Cypriot government for approving the agreement without considering the problems already faced by Cypriot farmers due to increased production costs and water scarcity. The government is accused of prioritizing the interests of multinational corporations over the interests of Cypriot farmers and public health.
