EU Justice and Home Affairs Council Focuses on Crime Proceeds, Cultural Goods, and Drugs

The Informal Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs of the EU, held in Nicosia, focused on the recovery of assets from criminal activities, the return of illegally trafficked cultural goods, and alternative treatment for young drug users. Ministers emphasized the link between organized crime, drugs, the digital environment, and violence, as well as the need to strengthen control in the digital space. The Belgian Minister of Justice stated that an estimated €188 billion circulates in the criminal economy, while only 2% of illegal profits are seized, highlighting the need to target the finances of criminal networks. Furthermore, the return of cultural goods to their countries of origin was discussed, with reference to the cases of Estonia and Ukraine.
