EU Commission Seeks New Cyprus Special Envoy Following Hahn's Resignation

The European Commission has begun procedures to appoint a new Special Envoy for Cyprus, following the resignation of Johannes Hahn, who has been appointed President of the Austrian National Bank. The Cypriot government has already been informed of Mr. Hahn's resignation through a letter to the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, in which he expressed his regret for the decision and emphasized the importance of resolving the Cyprus issue. Mr. Hahn stated that his increased obligations in his new position do not allow him to adequately respond to his mission as Special Envoy. The issue was also discussed during the meeting between President Christodoulides and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
