Erhurman: Clear Terms and Political Equality Needed Before New Cyprus Talks

Published February 18, 2026, 12:27

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman stated he will not participate in negotiations without clear terms and political equality for the Cyprus issue. He emphasized the Turkish Cypriots' desire for a solution based on legal and factual conditions, and argued that their rights are not limited to northern Cyprus. He criticized agreements between the Republic of Cyprus and third countries, considering them to ignore the presence of Turkish Cypriots, and criticized the EU for supporting projects that exclude them. He reiterated the need for political equality before any new negotiation process and stressed Turkey's role as a guarantor power.
