Erhurman: Christodoulides' Statements 'Beyond the Limits of Feasibility and Logic' – Inconsistencies Detected

Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, described recent statements by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, as “beyond the limits of feasibility and logic,” detecting inconsistencies within them. Mr. Erhurman referred to a shift in approach from restarting negotiations from where they left off in Crans Montana, to a five-point roadmap, and ultimately to the proposal for the return of Turkish Cypriots to the Republic of Cyprus. He argued that ideas regarding NATO membership, British Bases, and recognition by Turkey are “a product of fantasy” and that there is “confusion” in President Christodoulides’ statements, expressing fear that these reflect “panic.” Commenting on President Christodoulides’ reference to the Greek Revolution of 1821, Mr. Erhurman stressed that such references should not be taken seriously and that, if lessons are to be drawn from history, the processes of 2004 and 2017 regarding the Cyprus issue should be examined. Mr. Erhurman concluded by stating that the Turkish Cypriot side “proceeds with logic, will, seriousness, and consistency” and expressed hope that the same applies to the Greek Cypriot side.
