Erhurman: Christodoulides' Statements Are Beyond the Limits of Feasibility and Logic

Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, described recent statements by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, as “beyond the limits of feasibility and logic.” Mr. Erhurman argues that inconsistencies are found in the President's positions, referring to a changing approach to negotiations, from restarting from Kran Montana to the proposal for the return of Turkish Cypriots to the Republic of Cyprus. He claims that the ideas presented regarding NATO membership, British Bases, and recognition by Turkey are “a product of fantasy.” He believes there is “confusion” and expresses the fear that these statements “may reflect panic.” Commenting on President Christodoulides’ reference to the Greek Revolution of 1821, Mr. Erhurman argued that such references should not be taken seriously and that, if lessons are to be drawn from history, the processes for the Cyprus issue in 2004 and 2017 should be examined. Mr. Erhurman stated that the Turkish Cypriot side proceeds with logic, will, seriousness, and consistency, while expressing the hope that the same applies to the other side.
