End of an Era for MTV Channels with ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ – They Closed as They Started

MTV music channels have closed in many countries, ending their operation in the same symbolic way they started: broadcasting The Buggles’ song “Video Killed the Radio Star”. The closure affects Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Australia, and Brazil. MTV launched in the United States in 1981 and in Europe in 1987, revolutionizing the music industry and pop culture. However, in recent years, MTV’s main channel had turned to reality shows, limiting the broadcast of music videos to thematic channels. The closure of the music channels marks the end of an era for MTV. Former VJ Daisy Fuentes stated that it was an inevitable development, as the world has changed and MTV had to evolve with it. Nevertheless, the closure evokes nostalgia and sadness for many who grew up with MTV.
