Electricity Authority of Cyprus Workers Stage Strike Over Renewable Energy and Costs

Workers of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) staged a two-hour strike, protesting the “unfavorable treatment” of the EAC by the state and its exclusion from critical energy choices, such as Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and the upgrade of the Dekelia power station. The unions emphasize that the inclusion of more RES is the only way to reduce electricity costs. Workers believe that the EAC has been excluded from RES, which, they say, is confirmed by a report from the Audit Office. In addition, they denounce delays in the investment to upgrade the Dekelia station, which has increased costs and jeopardizes security of supply. The strike is a warning move, as the unions say they are willing to escalate their mobilizations. They raise the issue of energy adequacy, stating that power outages occurred last summer. They also call for better coordination and decisions from the CERA and the Cyprus Transmission System Operator. Workers also referred to the bill for Cyta, arguing that the prescribed public consultation process was not followed. Finally, the creation of central energy storage in the networks was proposed, to address problems from overproduction of photovoltaics.
