Dr. Giorgos Mikellidis: Serious Risks from Synthetic Cannabinoids

Clinical Assistant Professor of the Medical School of the University of Nicosia and psychiatrist, Dr. Giorgos Mikellidis, analyzed the serious risks associated with synthetic cannabinoids, such as MTMB. He pointed out that these substances, manufactured in laboratories, mimic the action of cannabis, but with a much more intense and unpredictable effect. They can cause euphoria and relaxation, but also serious side effects such as fainting and even death, especially in vulnerable individuals and adolescents. Dr. Mikellidis emphasized the worrying trend of laboratories to constantly modify the substances, creating new chemical variations that delay their prohibition due to legal loopholes. Users usually seek euphoria and altered perception, often as a way to manage anxiety or other mental difficulties. The psychiatrist stressed that substance use is not the right solution and advised those facing mental difficulties to seek professional help. Additionally, he referred to CBD (cannabidiol) and the European discussion regarding whether it should be considered a medicine or a dietary supplement, as well as the potential risks due to insufficient control of the content and purity of CBD products. He also noted that some use CBD as an alternative to stop using cannabis, but the issue of addiction remains. Overall, Dr. Mikellidis warned about the risks of synthetic cannabinoids and the need for increased awareness and caution, as well as for addressing mental difficulties in the right way, through professional help and not through the use of drugs.
