Division over the Social Support Fund Following the 'Videogate' Scandal

The future of the Social Support Fund is at the center of intense discussions in Parliament, following the scandal triggered by the so-called 'videogate'. The government is considering abolishing the fund and transferring it to the Grants and Subsidies Service of the Ministry of Finance. At the same time, two proposals are being debated: one from AKEL and one from DISY. The DISY proposal aims to strengthen accountability and transparency, providing restrictions on contributions and stricter rules for the selection of the fund's chairman, who will not be the First Lady or a person connected to the President. Additionally, it proposes the publication of donations exceeding 500 euros. AKEL, on the other hand, proposes the abolition of the Fund, considering it a center of collusion and corruption, emphasizing the existence of other mechanisms, such as the State Scholarship Foundation, to support students. These discussions highlight the need for transparency and accountability in resource management and avoiding phenomena of collusion.
