Denmark: "We Failed to Change Washington's Position" on Greenland

Denmark and the US continue to have a “fundamental disagreement” regarding Greenland, despite recent talks at the White House. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that the meeting was frank and constructive, but it was not possible to change Washington's position. Denmark emphasizes that the acquisition of Greenland by the US is not necessary, while Greenland wishes to strengthen cooperation with the US, but not become part of the country. Rasmussen reminded that Greenland is covered by Article 5 of the NATO Treaty and characterized ideas that do not respect the island's territorial integrity as unacceptable. He expressed a desire for cooperation with the US based on mutual respect. President Trump, according to Rasmussen, still desires the acquisition of Greenland. Denmark seeks close cooperation with the US, but on terms that respect Greenland's sovereignty. The meeting confirmed the existence of fundamental disagreements between the two countries, without leading to any change in the US position. Denmark remains firm in protecting the interests of Greenland and the need to respect its territorial integrity.
