Death of Migrant in ICE Custody: Mexico Demands Explanation

Mexico has demanded explanations from the United States regarding the death of a Mexican national while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Mexican consulate in Atlanta offered to cooperate with the investigation to determine the circumstances of the death. This death is the fourth since the beginning of 2026, following at least thirty deaths in ICE custody in 2025, the highest number since the agency's founding in 2004. ICE is at the forefront of President Trump's policy of mass arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants. Simultaneously, the case of the death of 37-year-old American, Renee Nicole Good, by an ICE agent in Minneapolis has sparked strong reactions and protests. Recently, a Venezuelan national was also injured by gunfire from an ICE agent, further escalating tensions. President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to send the military to Minneapolis, following clashes between law enforcement and protesters. This case highlights growing concerns about the conditions of detention and the tactics of ICE, as well as the political implications of the Trump administration's immigration policy.
