Dead Sperm Whale Washes Ashore in Northern Cyprus

A dead sperm whale, approximately five meters long and weighing 1.5 tons, washed ashore in the coastal area of Akanthou in Northern Cyprus on Tuesday afternoon. The mammal was found on a rocky beach, and wildlife rescue teams from a center based in Vouno were mobilized to remove and transport the animal. Center director Kemal Basat noted that the incident occurred near the date of a similar event three years ago, when 13 sperm whales were stranded. Work is underway to move the whale from the difficult location. After removal, the whale will be transported to the center's facilities, where a necropsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. The necropsy is essential to understand the reasons leading to the animal’s death and prevent similar incidents in the future. This incident highlights the importance of protecting marine life and monitoring coasts for the early management of such events. Relevant authorities are called upon to investigate the incident further and take measures to protect sperm whales and other marine mammals.
