Dangerous Narcotics Found in E-cigarettes Circulating in Cyprus

Strong concern has been raised by the detection of e-cigarettes containing dangerous narcotic substances, such as MDMB (spice), in the Cypriot market, as part of an international operation by the UN, in which the Customs Service participated. The products are particularly popular among students and adolescents. The Customs Service had seized 3,674 similar preparations in 2023. This operation also included laboratory testing of e-cigarette liquids, revealing the presence of the substance MDMB, which causes serious side effects and can lead to damage to the kidneys, brain or even death. The seized products will be destroyed and the NTA will investigate the case to identify the responsible suppliers. The origin of the products is mainly located in EU countries, such as the Netherlands and Greece (Crete), and the Greek authorities will be informed. The President of the Cyprus Addiction Treatment Authority, Mr. Christos Mina, stated that synthetic cannabinoids are extremely dangerous psychoactive substances made in laboratories that mimic the action of THC.
