Damage to Fish Farm in Liopetri Due to Bad Weather: Seabass and Seabream Released into the Sea

The recent bad weather caused significant damage to a fish farm in Liopetri, resulting in the release of large quantities of seabass and seabream into the sea. The Fisheries Department is recording losses of fish populations and is awaiting information from producers on the exact extent of the damage. Due to the large number of fish in each fish farm, calculating the losses is difficult. The phenomenon of damage to fish farms is frequent, mobilizing thousands of fishermen every year in the areas of Liopetri and Vasiliko, where the largest fish farm in Cyprus is located. The Fisheries Department appeals to fishermen to comply with regulations regarding the size and quantity of catches, in order to protect the populations of seabream and seabass. Specifically, the permissible size for catching seabass is 25 centimeters, while for seabream it is 20 centimeters. Compliance with these regulations is important for maintaining the sustainability of fish populations and avoiding overfishing. The Fisheries Department is closely monitoring the situation and will take further measures if deemed necessary.
