Cyprus Seeks Upgrade of 'Leonidas' Armored Vehicles, Greece Hesitant

The Cypriot Ministry of Defense and the National Guard General Staff are seeking to upgrade approximately 300 'Leonidas' type armored personnel carriers (APCs) to enhance operational readiness and extend the lifespan of the vehicles. The implementation of the modernization program requires the participation of Greece, which also possesses a significant number of vehicles of the same type. Cyprus has expressed its desire to proceed with the upgrade through the SAFE program, however, Athens maintains reservations. Athens prioritizes the upgrade of American M113 APCs, which it possesses in large numbers. The Greek company EODH has proposed a comprehensive upgrade of the 'Leonidas', which is considered to offer operational benefits at a lower cost than a complete fleet replacement, while strengthening Greece-Cyprus cooperation in the defense sector.
