Cyprus' application for inclusion in the Schengen area remains a central topic of discussion, with the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration expressing optimism about finding solutions, taking into account the island's specificities, such as the Green Line. The Commissioner emphasized that the European Commission fully supports Cyprus' accession, which would benefit the entire Schengen zone. A new assessment report is expected soon, as significant improvements have been made in recent months. The Green Line is recognized as a challenge, however, it is estimated that a solution can be found that will ensure the security of the Schengen area. The Deputy Minister for Migration and International Protection clarified that the Green Line is not a border and that the Republic has the right to carry out checks along the line, in accordance with the legal framework. Furthermore, significant developments were reported in the return of migrants, particularly to Syria, with more than three million Syrians already having returned. Frontex has supported nearly 6,000 voluntary returns to Syria, while the EU has spent approximately €620 million on Syria for the years 2026 and 2027, aiming to improve living conditions and enhance the sustainability of returns.
