Cyprus Rocked by Video Alleging Corruption at Presidential Palace

A leaked video containing conversations between alleged investors and political/business figures, including a former Energy Minister, a CEO of a major group, and the Director of the Presidential Office, has sparked a political storm in Cyprus. The video features discussions about potential financial 'donations' in exchange for access and favors from the Presidential Palace, as well as funding for the First Lady's Social Support Fund that may exceed legal limits for election expenses. DISY Spokesman, Onoufrios Koullas, accused the government of “organized collusion and corruption” and dismissed the explanations given as insufficient. He is calling for a full investigation by the competent authorities. The government, through the President of the Republic, has rejected the allegations, describing the situation as “business as usual” and calling on anyone with evidence to come forward. The Police are investigating the origin and authenticity of the video, examining all possible offenses. At the same time, the possibility of “hybrid actions” by foreign actors is also being considered, given that the release coincided with Cyprus taking over the Presidency of the EU. The case has also been reported in international media, such as Politico, which highlights the tension caused and the pressure on the government to provide explanations. The investigation is in its early stages and is expected to continue.
