Cyprus Promotes EU's Ocean Strategy

Cyprus, through its Presidency of the European Council, is actively promoting the European Union's Ocean Pact, a landmark strategy for managing and protecting marine ecosystems. European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Kostas Kadis, emphasized the importance of the Pact and Cyprus's active participation in its implementation, leveraging the momentum created for marine environmental protection and enhanced maritime security. The European Ocean Pact represents the EU's first comprehensive approach to the sustainable use and preservation of marine biodiversity. Cyprus, as an island nation, has a particular interest in issues related to the ocean and the sea, and President Christodoulides participated in the Pact's presentation in Nice, France. There is close coordination between the Cypriot Presidency and the European Commission for the implementation of the actions included in the Pact. Cyprus is leveraging the Pact's momentum to promote flagship actions in the field of maritime policy. Significant actions are expected in the first half of 2026, including two Strategies concerning island and coastal areas. These strategies aim to identify the specific characteristics and challenges faced by these regions, such as the impacts of climate change, connectivity, isolation, and waste management.
