Cyprus: Political Leaders Briefed on Contacts and British Bases

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis described the inclusion of a reference in the European Council's conclusions regarding the intention to initiate a dialogue between Cyprus and the United Kingdom on the British Bases as particularly important. This reference came about after coordinated efforts by the Cypriot side and is considered a significant achievement. The President of the Republic informed the political leadership about his contacts following the last National Council meeting, including meetings with the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the UN Secretary-General. Discussions focused on restarting negotiations on the Cyprus issue and making the most of the time remaining until the end of the UN Secretary-General's term. The political leadership also discussed broader geopolitical issues, the impact on energy prices, the management of foot-and-mouth disease, and other issues concerning Cyprus. Political forces expressed their views, and some submitted proposals. Furthermore, Cyprus's approach to the British Bases was discussed, as well as the President's telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The government seeks to ensure that the issue of the Bases is addressed in a way that promotes Cyprus's interests.
