Cyprus Parliament Discusses EU-Mercosur Deal and its Agricultural Impact

Published January 14, 2026, 17:18

The trade agreement between the EU and Latin American countries (Mercosur) was discussed in the House Agriculture Committee. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, emphasized that the agreement will improve export opportunities for Cypriot agricultural products by reducing tariffs by up to 55% and promote authentic Cypriot products. However, MPs and agricultural organizations expressed concerns about unfair competition, lack of controls on imported products, and the impact on the Cypriot primary sector. The new Minister of Health, Neofytos Charalambides, assured that public health will not be jeopardized and that strict controls will be carried out on imported food. The Committee decided to meet again next week with the participation of the Minister of Commerce.
