Cyprus Parliament Approves Insurance Coverage for Military Personnel

The Cyprus Parliament unanimously approved an amendment to regulations establishing insurance coverage for members of the National Guard in the event of death or permanent total disability while performing their duties. The coverage amount is €115,000 lump sum for the deceased's heirs, plus €95,000 per dependent, while in the event of disability, the amount of €115,000 is paid to the beneficiary, plus €95,000 per dependent. The insurance coverage will be paid upon the decision of a competent medical council, in cases of injury during the performance of duties or due to them. The amounts are not subject to tax or other charges. In the event that a lawsuit is filed against the Republic for compensation due to death or disability and the court awards compensation, the amount already paid under the regulations will be offset. The amendment to the regulations provides for the payment of allowances as compensation for the risk faced by members of the military while carrying out dangerous tasks. The amount of the allowances was determined by a decision of the Council of Ministers on June 11, 2025. This approval is a significant improvement in the protection of military personnel and their families, recognizing the risks associated with their service and providing financial support in the event of loss or disability.
