Cyprus One Step Closer to Schengen Area - Final Decision at Justice Council

Cyprus is on the verge of joining the Schengen Area, with the European Commission expected to adopt the Schengen evaluation report for the country in the coming months. European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, stated that Cyprus has made significant progress in all technical requirements, making the decision for accession a political one. The Commission fully supports Cyprus's efforts, emphasizing the importance of Schengen for freedom of movement, tourism, and trade within the EU. Concurrently, the European Union is preparing for the full implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact in June 2026. Mr. Brunner described 2025 as a good year for EU migration and asylum policy, noting a significant reduction in illegal border crossings – by more than half compared to 2023. The reduction in illegal crossings is attributed to the implementation of the Asylum and Migration Pact, as well as the adoption of new measures, such as the concept of a safe third country and a common list of safe countries of origin. These measures aim to reduce pressure on national asylum systems and simplify procedures. The Commission is working closely with all member states, including Cyprus, through dedicated teams, providing technical, operational, and financial support. Cyprus is expected to receive €290 million in support from the EU.
