Cyprus Ministry of Education Revives “I Know, I Don’t Forget, and I Struggle” Program

The Cyprus Ministry of Education is strongly reintroducing the “I Know, I Don’t Forget, and I Struggle” program at all levels of education, starting from pre-school age. According to the Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, this is crucial for children who haven’t had the opportunity to live in or experience the occupied territories of Cyprus, allowing them to learn through refugee testimonies and historical accounts. The minister emphasized that historical memory is fundamental in shaping conscious and responsible citizens and remains a strategic priority for the Ministry. The conference themed “Raise Your Back and Shake off my Pentadaktylos” took place on Friday, February 27th, at Kykkos A' Lyceum and signifies the Ministry's initiative to enrich historical knowledge and critical thinking skills among students. Michaelidou stated that the Pentadaktylos (Five Fingers) mountain range represents a landmark of historical memory and aspiration, marking the geographical basis of remembrance for the liberation of Cyprus. The Minister highlighted that historical consciousness is a state obligation and that education must provide students with the tools to develop critical thinking, form opinions, and demand justice, freedom, and dignity. According to the minister, demanding rights is an act of responsibility and a way of life, regardless of difficulties. History constitutes the identity of the people and the foundation to recognize the importance of striving, even when the goal seems unattainable. The Ministry of Education believes that historical memory is not just an educational component but a vital element in shaping a society of conscious and responsible citizens capable of facing future challenges and claiming their rights.
