Cyprus is a Safe Destination, Doughty Tells Ayia Napa Mayor

The Minister of State for Europe of the United Kingdom, Stephen Doughty, assured the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zannettou, that Cyprus remains a safe destination, despite recent concerns raised by incidents such as the drone incident in the Akrotiri area. Mr. Doughty emphasized that relevant references in travel advisories are precautionary and apply horizontally to many countries. The meeting took place at the British Sovereign Base Areas of Dhekelia and discussed the impact of recent developments on tourism and the economy of Ayia Napa. Mayor Zannettou presented data showing a slowdown in tourist bookings and stressed the need for clear and coordinated communication to ensure a positive image of Cyprus as a safe destination. Mr. Zannettou emphasized that tourism is the main pillar of the local economy and that any negative impression can have an immediate impact on bookings and employment. He reiterated that Cyprus remains a safe, modern, and welcoming destination. Mr. Doughty, for his part, expressed his understanding of the concerns and reiterated that there is no threat to Cyprus, while clarifying that travel advisories are precautionary and apply to many countries.
