Cyprus Highlights Link Between Competitiveness and Strategic Autonomy at European Parliament

The Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, highlighted the role of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU in promoting European competitiveness during a discussion at the European Parliament. She emphasized the link between competitiveness and European strategic autonomy, considering it a prerequisite for European independence. Cyprus took over the Presidency during a period of geopolitical and economic tensions, while strengthening European competitiveness is vital for economic development and sustainable prosperity. The Presidency has placed European strategic autonomy at the center of its actions. Ms. Raouna's speech referred to the pressures facing the EU, both from abroad (instrumentalization of dependencies) and from within (fragmentation of the single market), calling for bold and timely action. She referred to the work done after the Letta and Draghi reports, emphasizing that the relevant tools and plans provide a roadmap for a resilient and competitive Europe. Special emphasis was given to removing the barriers to the single market, particularly the so-called “terrible ten,” and reducing energy costs for households and businesses. The Deputy Minister stressed that simply completing the internal market is not enough and that the power of Europe needs to be recognized.
