Cyprus Health Minister: Hospital Situation Manageable, No Additional Measures Needed

The Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides, stated that the situation in hospitals, following the increase in hospitalizations due to seasonal infections, is manageable and no additional measures are required. During his visit to the Nicosia General Hospital, the Minister mentioned that securing beds from private hospitals is not deemed necessary. The number of infections remains at the same levels as last year, possibly even slightly lower, while the OKYPY assures that the situation is being managed effectively. The Ministry is informed daily about bed occupancy. The spread of RSV is being closely monitored and guidelines are being issued to relevant stakeholders. According to the Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Elisavet Konstantinou, cases of influenza, RSV, and COVID are showing a downward trend. The number of deaths from influenza remains at 32, with an expected peak after the holidays. There has been a significant response from the public to vaccination, and free immunization is provided for infants through the GESY pediatricians, and a vaccine is available for adults. Dr. Konstantinou warned of a possible second wave in March, but estimated that there is time for vaccination, especially for vulnerable groups, and that the second wave is usually milder.
