Cyprus Government Spokesperson Addresses Controversial Video

The Deputy Government Spokesperson, Yannis Antoniou, commented on the recently circulated video alleging a corruption mechanism within the Presidential Palace. Mr. Antoniou emphasized that the greatest damage to Cyprus' reputation comes from within the country, rather than from abroad. The government would welcome the video being proven as an attempt by journalists to uncover a scandal, but would be deeply concerned if it were the result of malicious intent by a foreign country. Mr. Antoniou divided the issue into two aspects: the content of the video and its origin. He highlighted the importance of investigating who created the video and their motives. The government believes the video contains a combination of authentic dialogues and manipulated elements, aimed at discrediting President Christodoulides and the Republic of Cyprus. Regarding domestic criticism, Mr. Antoniou stated that he respects the right of journalists and citizens to ask questions and exercise criticism, even strong criticism. However, he expressed his annoyance at the inconsistency of certain politicians who criticize while being involved in convictions themselves. The government, according to Mr. Antoniou, is trying to dispel the negative image created by the video, as it considers it unfair to the President, the government, and Cyprus. He expressed pride in Cyprus' efforts to be internationally recognized for positive reasons and stressed that domestic defamation is more harmful.
