Cyprus FM Addresses Situation Amidst Middle East Tensions, Reports Attempted Attack

The Cypriot Foreign Minister, Konstantinos Kombos, spoke to ERTnews regarding the situation in Cyprus amidst the Middle East crisis. He emphasized that the daily life of citizens remains largely normal, with schools, universities, the private and public sectors functioning as usual, and air traffic returning to pre-crisis levels. However, Mr. Kombos stressed the need for proactive and protective measures, mentioning a drone attack on a British base and a failed attack attempt that was neutralized outside of Cypriot territory. He clarified that the alerts being triggered are part of information gathering and not an indication of a state of war. He expressed gratitude for the immediate and substantial response from Greece and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as well as the practical assistance from France, Italy, and Spain. Cooperation with these countries is considered crucial for the protection of Cyprus. The Foreign Minister warned that the situation in the region is expected to remain escalating and concerning for some time. At the same time, he reiterated the Cypriot government's commitment to operate with the safety and protection of the country in mind, while avoiding the creation of an atmosphere of panic and war.
