Cyprus Exceeds EU Average in Female Scientists and Engineers

According to Eurostat data released on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the percentage of women working as scientists and engineers in Cyprus reached 42.3% in 2024. This figure is higher than the European Union average of 40.5%. At the EU level, women's participation in these fields has been steadily increasing in recent years, from 3.4 million in 2008 to 7.9 million in 2024. Women make up 40.5% of the total workforce of scientists and engineers in the EU in 2024. Higher participation of women is observed in knowledge-intensive services and generally in the services sector (45.1% and 45.0% respectively), while it is lower in manufacturing (22.4%) and other activities (23.6%). Within the EU, Latvia, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Bulgaria and Ireland record the highest percentages of female scientists and engineers, while Finland, Hungary, Luxembourg, Slovakia and Germany show the lowest. At the regional level, women make up the majority of scientists and engineers in 11 regions of the EU.
