Cyprus Disagrees with UN Resolution on Reparatory Justice

Cyprus has expressed its disagreement with the United Nations resolution on reparatory justice, which condemns slavery and colonialism and refers to the need for reparations for historical injustices. While Cyprus supports highlighting the crimes of the transatlantic slave trade and combating modern slavery, it disagrees with the final text due to legal and factual concerns. Specifically, Cyprus believes that the resolution does not adequately reflect its concerns and that the use of superlative expressions in relation to crimes against humanity is legally questionable, creating an inappropriate hierarchy. Cyprus had expressed a desire for a resolution focusing on historical memory and the fight against slavery, but a consensus could not be reached within the timeframe of the negotiations.
