Cyprus: Decisions Looming on Future of State Exhibition and Sopaz Area

The Municipality of Nicosia is nearing decisions regarding the development of the State Exhibition grounds and the Sopaz area. According to a completed study, the creation of a metropolitan park at the State Exhibition and an innovation zone in Sopaz is proposed. Mayor Charalambos Prountzos emphasized the need for green space in West Nicosia and requested a €2 million fund for the restoration of the State Exhibition. The study envisions the creation of the largest urban park in Cyprus at the State Exhibition, with limited construction and uses consistent with the area’s character. In Sopaz, the study includes a conference and exhibition center, as well as incentives for investment. Additionally, rainwater retention ponds are being promoted for flood protection and irrigation of the park. The tripartite committee, consisting of the Municipality of Nicosia, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the central government, is expected to meet in March to review the study’s findings and make final decisions. The Mayor expressed his satisfaction with the parliamentary oversight, which he said accelerates developments. The Chairman of the House Interior Committee, Aristos Damianou, expressed satisfaction that the residents’ requests were being implemented.
