Cyprus Coast Guard: A Decade in the Making - From Ioná's Announcements in 2015 to Fytiris' Priorities in 2025

The creation of a Coast Guard in Cyprus has been discussed for years, with the announcement by the Minister of Justice, Kostas Fytiris, and the recent approval of a proposal by the Council of Ministers rekindling interest. However, history has shown that announcements do not always lead to results, as similar efforts were made in 2015 by the then Minister of Justice, Ionas Nikolaou, without being implemented. In 2015, the Anastasiades government announced the acceleration of procedures for the creation of a Coast Guard, due to the refugee crisis, with the aim of better monitoring the coasts and the sea area. The initial idea included strengthening the Police and the National Guard, as well as coordinating actions for firefighting. Contacts followed with Greece for the exchange of information regarding the operation of the Greek Coast Guard, while announcements were also made regarding the purchase of equipment. However, these efforts did not bear fruit. Therefore, the current effort will be judged by whether it will overcome the obstacles of the past and lead to the actual operation of the Coast Guard.
