Cyprus Bids Farewell to Former President George Vassiliou

The funeral of former President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, who passed away at the age of 94, was held at the Church of Holy Wisdom in Strovolos. The funeral was conducted at public expense with the honors of an incumbent President, and was attended by high-ranking government officials, including the Minister of State Stavros Papastavrou and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Konstantinos Kombos, as well as the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides and other politicians. Upon the arrival of the coffin, the Police Philharmonic played mournful marches and a military guard of honor paid their respects. The late President's wife, Androulla Vassiliou, expressed her grief over the loss of a man who loved the people and the country, while emphasizing her husband's contribution to the establishment of democracy in Cyprus. The body of George Vassiliou had been laid in state at the church for public viewing on Friday.
