Cyprus Approves €4.16 Million for Wildfire Prevention

The Council of Ministers has approved an additional €4.16 million to strengthen the prevention and management of agricultural and forest fires. The funds will be allocated to cleaning abandoned agricultural land and areas around communities, subsidizing the purchase of fire engines and equipment for Community Councils, and renting machinery for the summer period. The goal is to improve preparedness and prevention in anticipation of the fire season. The allocation of funds will be done through Community Service Clusters or directly to Community Councils for faster procedures. The Fire Service is collaborating with community leaders to determine the firebreak zones. Additionally, communities will be subsidized for the purchase of fire engines, with priority given to those bordering forests or having a low number of fire engines relative to the size of the cluster. Finally, part of the amount will be used to rent bulldozers and tankers in strategic locations during the summer.
