Cyprus Air Defense Capabilities: Options for Intercepting Aerial Threats

In a climate of increased geopolitical tension in the Eastern Mediterranean, and following the recent Iranian drone strike on a British base, the Republic of Cyprus is examining its options for intercepting aerial threats. Cyprus has a layered air defense system including the Barak MX (range up to 100 km), Buk M1-2 (up to 40 km), Tor-M1 (up to 10 km), Othellos (up to 20 km) and Mistral 3 (up to 7 km). These systems can counter various types of threats, such as ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) of different categories. The effectiveness of the system depends on the integration of radar, command and control, as well as reaction time. In addition, Greece has offered assistance to Cyprus, sending the frigate HS Kimon, equipped with the “Kentavros” anti-aircraft system, to strengthen the security and defense of the Republic of Cyprus. Greece will send a second frigate. There are approximately 2,500 shelters in Cyprus, covering about 40-45% of the population. Citizens can find information about the nearest shelter through the “SafeCY” application.
