Cypriot Farmers Complain: “Water is Granted from Dams to Golf Courses and Cut Off from Us”

Published January 9, 2026, 10:45

The Union of Cypriot Farmers (UCF) is complaining that water from dams is being granted to golf courses and tourist accommodations, especially in Paphos, while at the same time the supply of water to farmers from government water projects is being restricted. The UCF emphasizes that this practice leads to the economic destruction of farmers and endangers the production of Cypriot products. It points out that Cyprus, as a partially occupied country, must ensure its food security. The organization calls on the Government and the Minister of Agriculture to urgently convene the Agricultural Advisory Committee to discuss alternative solutions to address the problem. The UCF warns that farmers are in despair and that consumers will be forced to pay the price for the lack of Cypriot products, while emphasizing the need for food self-sufficiency.
