Cypriot Bodies Bid Farewell to Giorgos Vassiliou

Various bodies in Cyprus expressed their condolences on the death of former President Giorgos Vassiliou, who passed away at the age of 94. The Federation of Employers and Industrialists (OEB) emphasized that the late President provided invaluable services to Cyprus and passionately supported its interests. The SEK expressed its respect and appreciation for the important work produced by Giorgos Vassiliou during his presidency, as well as for his overall contribution to the socio-economic life of the country. The PEO General Council referred to the late President’s work on resolving the Cyprus issue and reunifying the island, as well as the significant changes and improvements he promoted on various issues during his term. The Glafkos Clerides Institute described Giorgos Vassiliou as an important figure who left his mark on the political history of Cyprus. It highlighted his cooperation with Glafkos Clerides, despite their political rivalry, and his support for Clerides in the 1998 presidential elections. Finally, the Institute stressed that entrusting Giorgos Vassiliou with the role of Chief Negotiator for Cyprus's accession to the European Union by Glafkos Clerides was crucial to achieving the goal of accession.
