Critical Dam Levels: Significant Rainfall Needed to Replenish Water Reserves

Published January 23, 2026, 15:25

The situation in Cyprus' dams is described as “tragic” due to the minimal inflow of water from recent rainfall. Only 400,000 cubic meters of water have been collected, while 45 million are needed to improve the situation. Water Development Department Technical Officer, Marios Chatzikostis, stated that only significant and sustained rainfall in February and March can reverse the negative trend. Dam levels currently stand at just 11%, compared to 26% at the same time last year. Rainfall in Cyprus has been much lower than in Greece, making similar heavy rainfall necessary to replenish water reserves.
