Critical analysis of the exercise of the Democratic Polity, after the Independence of the Republic of Cyprus (1960)

The analysis of the exercise of democratic polity in Cyprus after independence in 1960 focuses on a critique of the “Democracy of Parties”. In this system, political offices are primarily occupied by party members, who promote their ideologies through statutes and organized structures. The Constitution of Cyprus guarantees the right to candidacy to all citizens, however, in practice, access to politics is limited, as success is often linked to the support of a party. Experience shows that independent candidates are rarely elected. The analysis highlights the need for parties to prioritize the public interest over their own party interests, questioning their very existence if they do not. Furthermore, it points to a lack of transparency and the concentration of power in the hands of parties, as well as the difficulty for citizens to actively participate in political life.
